Rescue Program

Purpose of the CDFEA Rescue Program:

“CDFEA has created and appointed the Committee on Sheltering and Transportation to implement and oversee a program whose sole purposes are to assure that domestic ferrets are safely, humanely, and expeditiously as practicable, transported outside the State of California, and to assure that the ferret’s medical, social, emotional and physical needs are appropriately and lawfully carried out while in the temporary care and custody of CDFEA. Due to the guidelines set forth by the Department of Fish and Game, and a lack of funding for such an exhaustive task, CDFEA will not accept private surrenders. The Sheltering and Transportation Committee shall only accept ferrets that are in need of rescue and conveyance out of the state.

Because of the emotional and legal risk to both the animal and the pet owner for possessing a ferret within the State of California, CDFEA does not encourage the ownership of domestic ferrets in California.”

At this time, CDFEA is the only organization within the State of California that holds a valid permit from the California Department of Fish and Game to lawfully carry out the purpose stated above.
